Hungering For God: Seeking God Through Prayer & Fasting
Though a forgotten spiritual discipline, fasting and prayer was a significant spiritual practice for most of the Bible’s major figures. Moses, David, Elijah, Esther, Daniel, Paul, and others, relied upon fasting and prayer as a way to connect with God in times of crisis, confess to God during seasons of repentance, renew their intimacy with God, and empower them to fulfill God’s calling in their life. Jesus not only fasted and prayed, when He taught on fasting He would simply say, “When you fast.” It was assumed God’s people fasted. Through history, most major revivals were preceded by an Spirit-dependent, prayer-empowered, gathering of the saints who came together to pray and fast, asking God to increase their love and obedience to Him, and imploring God to save the lost in their family, neighborhood, and nation. We want to do the same. Starting January 1, C3 Houston will begin a new series called Hungering for God. During the month of January, we will consider 5 biblical narratives to inspire our obedience in seeking the Lord together as the Body of Christ. Each Sunday we will preach and pray, and every Monday through January, we will gather from 6:30-7:30PM and pray corporately. As we gain greater clarity about fasting, we will finish the month by fasting and praying together for three nights (M 1/30, T 1/31, W 2/1) from 6:30-7:30PM. We want to give the first portion of our year to the Lord by seeking His face purposefully, expectantly, and corporately.
